South African Airways will shut down, to be replaced with new airline

It looks like the end of the road for South African Airways (SAA) is near, said the National Transport Movement (NTM). Based on a report from SABC News, the decision however will result to the termination of all SAA employees contract. The airline has been flying for 86 years.

NTM president, Mashudu Raphetha said, “It is a very sad day for the whole of the Republic that SAA is now going to shut down and we are now going to witness the emergence of the new airline.”

The SAA employees to be affected will be given priority should they decide to join the new airlines. The affected employees will also be given severance packages worth a total of US$117 million.

The South African Cabin Crew Association (SACAA) which represents the SAA flight attendants are reportedly taking the airline to court; in an attempt to block the entrenchment process.
