In a statement, Cebu Pacific director for communications said, "The rightsizing of Cebu Pacific will be necessary to fulfill our commitment to provide affordable, accessible, and available air travel and air transport services to every Juan in the years to come."
The airline is looking to slash about 30% of its total number of employees in order to cut costs and to implement long term streamlining measures.
Just last week, Cebu Pacific's ground handling unit 1Aviation laid-off around 1,000 more employees, on top of the 400 non-regulars who were previously removed.
Government bailout still uncertain
While other state governments have committed to bailout their airlines such as the case of Cathay Pacific, there is still no sign whether the Philippines will extend the same to the airlines. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has already urged governments including the Philippines to provide support for the bleeding airlines.
The Air Carriers Association of the Philippines (ACAP) has also urged and pushed Malacanang and congress to include the airlines in the stimulus package to help businesses however, the Palace considered businesses such as airlines as non-urgent.
