Several killed after Air India Express 737 crashes while landing in Kozhikode

 An Air India Express flight from Dubai to Kozhikode in South West Coast of India crashed during landing at around 1940H local time. Around 14 people are reported dead as of this writing and a lot more injured.


The flight, IX1344 utilizing a Boeing 737-800, was enroute from Dubai to Calicut, carrying a total 190 people which include 174 passengers, 10 infants, 4 cabin crew, and 2 pilots. According to some initial reports, the aircraft overan runway 10 of Kozhikode Airport, India, falling into an embankment which caused it to break apart.

In a report from Al Jazeera, senior local policeman Abdul Karim was quoted as saying "I can confirm at least 14 deaths overall. Another 15 passengers have critical injuries. It is still a developing situation."

"We have at least 89 people, many of them with serious injuries, admitted at different Kozhikode hospitals. The ambulances are still coming in," said Sujith Das, another senior police official.

"We have been told that all those who have survived the crash also have some form of injuries."

The cause of the crash is still unknown. 

The aircraft involved


The Boeing 737-800 involved in the incident, with registry VT-AXH, first took-off on November 15, 2006, therefore, 13 years of service. It was delivered to Air India Express on November 30, 2006. So far, there are no other incidents reported which involved the same aircraft.
