An airliner was almost shot down by anti-aircraft defenses over Syria. A Cham Wings Airbus A320 carrying 172 passengers made an emergency landing in a nearby Russian-controlled Khmeimim air base after Syria retaliated on an Israeli F-16 fighter jet which fired eight missiles on targets near Damascus, according to Russian Air Force Spokesman Igor Konashenkov.
The passenger aircraft was originally flying from Tehran to Damascus when it flew into the retaliatory path of Syrian air defenses. After narrowly avoiding being hit by anti-aircraft fire, the A320 terminated its approach and made an emergency landing in the Russian air base.
This comes after a Ukraine International Airlines Boeing 737-800 was shot down by anti-aircraft fire right after taking-off from Tehran killing 176 passengers and crew.
The Damascus Air Traffic Control was praised by the Russian Defense Ministry for its efforts to get the Cham Air civilian aircraft out of harm's way. "Only thanks to prompt actions of dispatchers at Damascus airport and effective work of the automated system of monitoring air traffic, the Airbus-320 was escorted from the danger zone and assisted in successfully landing at an aerodrome at the Russian airbase Hmeymim," they said.
