British Airways has announced the suspension of all its flights to and from mainland China due to the Novel Coronavirus (NCoV) outbreak, the airline said. The airline, which operates daily roundtrip flights to Shanghai and Beijing from London Heathrow has announced the suspension of all its flights to mainland China "wish immediate effect."
This announcement comes after the United Kingdom (UK) Foreign Office has advised against all travels, except for the essential ones to the country.
British Airways operates direct flights to Beijing's newly opened Daxing and Shanghai utilizing Boeing 777 and 787 jets.
“We have suspended all flights to and from mainland China with immediate effect following advice from the Foreign Office against all but essential travel,” British Airways said.
The UK is also arranging the evacuation of its nationals from Wuhan and the Hubei region which is thought to have around 300 UK nationals.
Japan, the U.S. and some EU countries are also repatriating their respective citizens.
In a statement, British Airways said, "We apologise to customers for the inconvenience, but the safety of our customers and crew is always our priority."
Other airlines like Cathay Pacific, United Airlines, and Air Canada have already cancelled some flights to China.
The NCoV virus has claimed more than 100 lives spreading across China and to at least 16 other countries.
