The Lufthansa group of carriers have suspended flights to mainland China following the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus which has affected thousands of people and is beginning to spread to different countries. This comes after British Airways announced the suspension of its flights to mainland China. Together with the mainline carrier Lufthansa, its subsidiaries Swiss and Austrian Airlines have suspended flights as well.
The suspension will last until February 9.
Lufthansa operates flights from Frankfurt to Beijing, Shanghai, Shenyang, Nanjing, and Quingdao. It also operates flights from its Munich hub to Beijing and Shanghai.
Its subsidiaries Swiss and Austrian Airlines operate direct flights from its hubs in Zurich and Vienna respectively to Beijing and Shanghai.
In a report from FlightGlobal, Lufthansa said, "The safety of passengers and employees is a top priority for the Lufthansa Group.”
“Lufthansa Group will continuously monitor the situation of the corona virus and is in contact with the responsible authorities,” they added.
The Lufthansa group operates 54 weekly flights to mainland China. This excludes their 19 flights to and from Hong Kong.
The airlines have also stopped accepting bookings to mainland China until the end of February.
