Kazanah Nasional is reportedly pushing for the merging of Malaysian Airlines and AirAsia X, based on a report by Ch-Aviation. The Malaysian sovereign fund looks to turn the two loss-making airlines into a profitable single entity. Malaysia Airlines is wholly-owned by Kazanah Nasional while AirAsia X is owned by the AirAsia Group. Several shareholders opposes the merger which is seen as a bailout for Malaysian Airlines.
The fund did not comment much on the report. They said, "the review of strategic options for Malaysia Airlines is ongoing and involves multiple parties that have expressed interest. Ultimately, the airline’s future is a policy decision that impacts various stakeholders including Malaysia Airlines, its staff and customers."
On the other hand, AirAsia Group Chief, Tony Fernandes, has previously refuted that AirAsia will be involved in the restructuring of Malaysia Airlines.
The Malaysian government and Kazanah Nasional over the past few months have been weighing options over Malaysian Airlines and its future. No final decisions have been reached so far.
